If I were a student again I would start a low cost business before I'd ever look for a job. I didn't know then what I know now and I'm assuming these girls from the university didn't either. I remember hearing them talk about what it would look like on a resume to show they didn't have a job for a long period of time. They were concerned that potential future employers wouldn't like it. Of course I chimed in and let them know that being an employer I knew that thinking was polar opposite of what would likely occur.
A low cost business idea to start like a cleaning business for instance would be a great business idea that would earn profit almost immediately. With low start up costs, no overhead, and low to no budget advertising a college kid could easily earn 500 bucks a week working a few days. They probably wouldn't do that with a job. Making money without a job offers other benefits too. Tax write offs like vehicle expenses, some cloths, space in your apartment you use for an office, and countless other write offs would make the decision to start a side business for extra income all the better.

While these might not be the most glamorous business ideas on the planet most jobs that we get stuck doing in college aren't either. Think about it. If your going to be working anyway why not get paid more and work less hours. Obviously you'll have to work hard if you want happy customers, but its worth it.
And working your own business and letting an employer know will at the very least exhibit your desire and willingness to take initiative and it shows you have an entrepreneurial spirit.
Any ideas to add?
